In their natural state, Yeerks resemble large slugs, and live in lakes of sludge known as Yeerk pools. They are parasitic, with the ability to enter another being's body through the ear canal and take over all brain functions, including basic motor skills and speech control, even gaining access to the host's memories to essentially soak up and "become" that person. Yeerks inhabiting host individuals are known as Controllers in this state. Every 72 hours, a Yeerk must leave its host body to enter the Yeerk pool and absorb Kandrona rays. Kandrona is naturally produced by the sun of the Yeerks' homeworld, but the Yeerks have developed artificial Kandrona machines which allow them to travel away from their planet. Without Kandrona nutrients, a Yeerk will die.

Yeerk Pools
A Yeerk pool is a body of liquid, sort of like a swamp, that a Yeerk must return to every three days in order to absorb Kandrona rays. The Earth Yeerk pool is located in a giant, ever-expanding underground complex which spans beneath the Animorphs' entire hometown. It's frequently attacked and damaged, but not yet destroyed. The Yeerk pool, along with the Kandrona, is similar to a church or another place of reverence for the Yeerks.

Council of Thirteen
The ancient ruling body of the Yeerk Empire, even the highest and most powerful Vissers answer to the Council of Thirteen. One of the council members is actually the Yeerk Emperor, but no one but the council members know who it is, in order to combat assassination attempts. To kill the Emperor, one would have to kill all Thirteen. The Emperor's identity is not revealed, but Visser One implies that her mentor, Garoff, is probably the Emperor. A seat on the Council of Thirteen is the highest rank in the Yeerk Empire, which those such as Visser Three aspire to be in.

Vissers
A Visser is a rank in the Yeerk army equivalent to an Andalite War Prince, or a human warlord or General. There are about 47 Vissers. They are one rank below a member of the Council of Thirteen. To obtain the rank of Visser, a Yeerk has to climb the large hierarchy, slowly going lower in number designation, before that receiving the rank of Sub-Visser. Every notch up in the ranking is accounted for either by that individual's achievements or by the demotion or elimination of their superiors, so every Visser must usually be ruthless and brutal as well as conniving and powerful.

Visser Three
Born as Esplin 9466 Primary and later known as Visser One, he is the leader of the Yeerk forces on Earth. He inherits the title from Edriss 562, who is the current Visser One. Sadistic and cruel with a penchant for torture, Visser Three almost solely inhabits the body of fully-grown Andalite warrior Alloran-Semitur-Corrass, and is the only Yeerk to have obtained an Andalite host. He also possesses the Andalites' ability to morph as a result, and is known to have acquired some exceptionally powerful and frightening morphs from many different planets. He murdered Prince Elfangor in cold blood on the night that the Animorphs received their powers.
